What Shelf Height?

The ideal height for shelves depends on their use and the space in which they are installed.

Here are some guidelines for different applications and configurations:

Shelves in a Library or Living Room

  • For Books and Decorative Objects: A standard height between shelves ranges from 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches), accommodating most books and decorative items. If you have larger objects, adjust accordingly.

  • For Dishes and Utensils: Shelves used to store plates, glasses, and utensils can be spaced approximately 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 inches) apart.
  • For Large Appliances: If you need to store larger appliances or pots, a spacing of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 inches) may be necessary.

Bedroom Shelves

  • For Clothes and Accessories: If shelves are used in a closet or for storing clothes, a spacing of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 inches) is often ideal for easy access and good visibility.

Office Shelves

  • For Supplies and Documents: In an office, for storing supplies, books, or binders, a spacing of 25 to 35 cm (10 to 14 inches) may be appropriate.

Height from the Floor

  • Bottom Shelf: The first shelf at the bottom should ideally be at least 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches) from the floor to prevent dust accumulation and facilitate cleaning.
  • Top Shelf: The maximum height of the shelves should allow for comfortable access. For most people, this means not placing the last shelf more than 180 to 200 cm (70 to 78 inches) from the floor.

General Considerations

  • Accessibility: Ensure frequently used items are at an easily accessible height. Rarely used items can be placed higher.
  • Safety: For families with young children, avoid placing heavy or dangerous objects on high shelves where they could fall.
  • Customization: Modularity or adjustable shelves offer flexibility to adapt spacing to changing needs.

Planning shelf spacing and height should take into account functionality, aesthetics, and safety to create a harmonious and practical space.
